Special Note from Artist:
In 2011, an Asian mother, married to an American, wrote a book about her two daughters and how she raised them in traditional Asian ways, with respect for their elders and education. The focus of their lives became education, homework, ballet practice and music. Social activities and interaction with peers was nonexistent.

When grades were not to mom's standards, harsh punishment was dispatched, followed by more homework, practice, study. The media and the general public were outraged about these children and the hardship this type of lifestyle caused them.

Although harsh by most standards, I came to understand that she just did what she learned as a child herself and she did it out of concern and love for the children and their futures. The story was the inspiration for this painting... it made me feel she was a tiger mother... soft expression on her face, but fiercely insistent that her children learn how to survive and thrive, above all else.
